Detectives investigating Gerard Ross murder say pubic hair found on his sock and red-blonde hair on clothes could lead to killer

Detectives investigating the unsolved murder of Gerard Ross hoped a pubic hair found on the schoolboy’s sock would lead them to his killer. Police have, for the first time since Gerard’s 1997 abduction, confirmed that “potentially significant evidence” was collected during the 11-year-old’s autopsy more than two decades ago. Among the items was a pubic hair on Gerard’s sock and a “red-blonde” hair found on his clothes. While police do not normally reveal exhibits outside of court proceedings, the existence of the hairs was made public late last month during the trial of accused Claremont serial killer Bradley Robert Edwards. This occurred when documents listing forensic exhibits from multiple cold cases, that were taken overseas for DNA testing in 2008, were shown in court. After the inadvertent public disclosure, Special Crime division boss Det-Supt Rod Wilde confirmed the hairs were considered “significant” evidence at the time, but forensic testing has not yielded a breakthrough. “A lot of times it’s difficult to get a DNA profile from hairs,” he said. “But with advancements in DNA analysis, they certainly could provide us with valuable information in times to come.” The police investigation into Gerard’s case has become one of the biggest in the State’s history, second only to the probe into the Claremont serial killings, and has generated more than 10,000 police job logs. Gerard vanished during a family holiday at Rockingham in October 1997. Horse trainer Mick Miller found his body in the Karnup pine plantation 20km away, two weeks later. Documents shown in court last month revealed Det-Sgt Jim Stanbury, who was in charge of the investigation into Gerard’s case, and the Macro case, took the hairs found on Gerard’s clothing to Britain’s Forensic Science Service for DNA testing in September 2008. Supt. Wilde, a detective of 30 years, said police have always hoped the hairs would implicate Gerard’s killer. “Obviously, they’re significant because the hairs are not Gerard’s,” he said. “Any evidence of a third party or another person who has come into contact with Gerard, although we treat it with caution, would, of course, be very interesting to us. If we can identify whose hair it is, obviously that would open up further lines of investigation.” It was also revealed in court that DNA from Gerard’s father Stewart was taken to Britain to eliminate the possibility that the hairs were his. The DNA of nine suspects was also sent for analysis. “I can’t go into specifics around individual items but in a general sense, hairs might give us the identity of another person who has possibly come in contact with Gerard, but we’re also aware there are other explanations for how he might have picked up those hairs,” Supt Wilde said. “It could have been some causal contact. We know he was staying at a holiday unit and people pick up things on their clothing out in the general environment. “So, while it’s significant we treat it with caution as well.” He yesterday said that his team had taken analysis of the hair exhibits – which remain uncontaminated – “as far as we can”, at this time, to discover their origin. “There have been several forensic reviews into Gerard’s case over the years,” he said. “We have recently conducted a full forensic review around all of the exhibits and with that we were looking at the latest forensic developments and what can we do now with that forensic material that we’ve captured. “Obviously if we see opportunities for cutting edge scientific investigation, of course we’ll explore that, and that was the case in this instance (with the hairs).” It comes just months after The West released an investigative documentary, The Boy in the Blue Cap, in which police revealed they had begun a cold case review of the Newman schoolboy’s baffling case. In an exclusive interview for the eight-part web series, Supt Wilde said that his team at the cold case homicide squad remained desperate to find Gerard’s navy-blue baseball cap with YANKEES across the front in large white lettering. “It is the one item that hasn’t been located so obviously, although it’s been 22 years, there is still an opportunity that that hat could be located,” he said. “We searched a vast area, vast areas of land, certainly around Rockingham (for that hat),” he said.
