When I sat down to write this review, I wondered how heavily I should lean into the French romance trope.

On one hand, Remi French Street Food’s deliciously delicate crepes, made in a charming converted-caravan food truck, fit the European romance novel bill.

On the other hand, I spent breakfast bickering with my date about the best way to take the photographs. As it would happen, crepes and I have two things in common — neither of us is photogenic on a Sunday morning.

My date and I were in a sorry mood as we had stayed out late the night before. Geraldton’s harsh sunlight felt oppressive.

Come to think of it, a romance laced with red wine is “la vie en rose” all over.

I know some people like their coffee like their scorned lovers — bitter and piping hot. But I found Remi’s coffee a little overdone for my taste.

The soy and regular caps my date and I ordered weren’t our favourites, but it certainly didn’t tarnish our experience.

I decided to turn the Sunday decadence dial up to 10, ordering a Nutella and Ferrero Rocher crepe. It was just what the doctor ordered.

The crepe was as light and dainty as Cinderella’s slipper, fitting her foot — three times my recommended daily intake of sugar — with ease. Well, until I took a few ill-considered bites and ended up with chocolate on my nose, hands and shirt.

The nutty melted Ferrero Rocher added some grit to the slippery mouth-feel. It was premium, though not as good as my all-time favourite Nutella and strawberry combo, which often appears on Remi’s seasonal menu.

My date ordered the banana, walnut and maple syrup crepe.

He said it was sugary, fresh, and what he needed first thing on a Sunday morning.

The brain-shaped nuts, which he said added texture to his crepe, went straight to his head.

His mood picked up instantly.

By the end of our crepe rendezvous, we were much better at being in each other’s company — perhaps proving French food is the cupid of the culinary world.

We might not be able to visit France at the moment, but Remi’s food can bring a bite-sized part of the experience right to Geraldton’s doorstep.

Keep an eye out for it when you visit the Platform Markets, Sundays by the Sea, Sunset IGA, and St Georges Beach.
