Geraldton netball’s two best players of last season say if you want something, you should never give up.

Aztecs teammates Paula Wilson and Michelle Taylor were both coming back into the game, Wilson after surgery following knee injury and Taylor after a move back to WA, and ended up jointly winning the award for most valuable player.

“I was just super stoked to be out there each week,” Wilson said.

“Enjoy every minute of it.”

“If you’re out there after an injury like that, make the most of it.”

“There’s a huge sense of achievement when you come together as a team and you’re winning games.

“The feeling of being in a team with a great group of people around you is the best feeling in the world.”

Taylor also said she had not expected the season to go quite the way it did.

“I came into the season just wanting to have fun and to be able to see my friends a bit more,” Taylor said.

“I haven’t been around the scene in recent times. It was great to get back involved. I didn’t come in with the intention to win MVP, that’s for sure.”

She said she had not been playing a lot of netball in recent years due to family commitments, but with a move back to WA from Victoria, she had more free time to get to games. Wilson and Taylor both previously played in the Perth metro competition for the Mid West Tigers, the local representative side.

They also featured this season in an all-stars team heavy on Pumas and Aztecs players, with Pumas Hannah Trusso, Annie Ducas and Julia Teakle and Aztecs Libby Shuttlewood, Abbie McDonald and Rene Brand along with Breezes’ Kelsie Crowe and Georgia Keysers from Lightning.

Aztecs finished a stunning season at the end of September with a tense grand final to go undefeated.

They beat Pumas by two points, 43-41, with the sides neck-and-neck until the last seconds.
