John Butler loves the Abrolhos and is heading regional to treat ‘key believers’

In the lead-up to his national tour, legendary song-man John Butler revealed one of his “favourite places on the planet”, singing the praises of a slice of paradise on Geraldton’s doorstep.

“When I head to Geraldton, I head straight out to the Abrolhos,” he said.

Despite a slew of cancellations and unavoidable COVID-19 pandemic hiccups, the musician has set a date for the Geraldton leg of his tour for June 22.

It will be a family affair, with Mama Kin — a celebrated singer-songwriter and Butler’s wife of 22 years — and the pair’s children joining him on the road and stage.

“It will be a trip of a lifetime for us as a family. A really rare opportunity,” Butler, pictured, said.

“After the tour, we’re going to be travelling around in the truck.”

Although he has always made an effort to tour the regions, he said the closed borders meant there was less competition for his time, allowing him to slow down and play for his “key believers”.

“You’re the peeps that made it all happen. I lost money overseas for 10 years before any of this happened,” he said.

“It’s nice to get around and service the people who deserve it the most.”

He also noted regional venues were stunning.

He is booked in for Queens Park Theatre on June 22.

Butler said punters should expect an authentic show in which he would be “earnest”, “wear his heart on his sleeve”, and give his “200 per cent”.

“You will still get the wall-of-sound guitar melting-your-face-off moment — it’s what I do,” he said.

“But, there will also be these really intimate moments where you can hear a pin drop.”
