Geraldton women’s Hockey squads impress at country week championships in Perth

Three Geraldton hockey teams headed down to Perth to compete in the women’s country week championships over the weekend, just missing out on finals against a high calibre of competition.

A-division one and two masters teams faced off against teams from Busselton, Albany, Narrogin, Three Springs, Esperance, Peel and other associations encompassing country WA towns, with the division one women leaving third on the ladder and both masters teams fifth.

Geraldton council pulls out of funding for organisations

Geraldton Hockey Association’s Emma Bowen said the teams’ losses did not reflect the high standard of hockey they had played.

“It was a great weekend of hockey played by our Geraldton girls and the results did not reflect the standard of hockey that was played,” she said.

“Division one were unlucky to not make the grand final, but a well fought out weekend overall.”

She said the Geraldton masters had great team play all weekend, with assistance from some former Geraldton veterans who stepped in to make up squad numbers.

Gemma Dix, Kayley King, Caitlin Mundy and Cam McKoy were Geraldton’s division one goal scorers, with the team coached by Warrick Sullivan and James Van Niftrick.

Back in Geraldton, Yacht Club beat Murchison 5-2 in the men’s A-grade, with goals for Murchison scored by Riley West.

The Casuals defeated the Rovers 1-nil thanks to Angus Grant, while in the men’s A-reserve the Saints beat Australs 1-nil via Carter Pardoe.

The Rovers redeemed themselves against Casuals 2-1.
