Geraldton hockey: Four young guns earn State under-16s squad call-up ahead of national tournament in April

Four of Geraldton’s rising hockey talents are set to test themselves against the nation’s best, with Nate O’Brien, Braiden Hinge, Rueben Boonzaier and Leah-May Labuschagne selected to represent WA at the Hockey Australia Under 16 Championships in Hobart. The week-long tournament runs from April 14 to 21 and brings together the top junior players from across the country in what is regarded as a key stepping stone in the Hockey Australia pathway. For the Geraldton quartet, selection did not come easy. Each player progressed through a demanding three-stage trial process, needing to earn selection at every step to keep their opportunity alive. From there, the commitment only increased, with regular weekend travel to Perth for intensive training sessions on both Saturdays and Sundays in the lead-up to departure. O’Brien said making the side was only the beginning. “The journey doesn’t end when you make the State team, that’s where the real challenge begins,” he said. Hinge echoed that sentiment, backing the value of effort over natural ability. “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work, and my hard work is starting to pay off,” he said. Labuschagne said the selection was a proud moment, but also a reminder to keep striving. “Getting to the State championship shows how far we have come, but it also reminds us of how much more we are capable of,” she said. Boonzaier also spoke of the honour in wearing WA colours. “Representing WA is a massive honour and I’m really thankful for the opportunity, but I believe this is only the beginning and the journey is just getting started,” he said. The championships will provide all four players with invaluable experience against elite opposition, while also showcasing the strength of regional development pathways. As they prepare to head to Hobart, the group carries not only their own ambitions, but the pride of a community that continues to produce high-quality young athletes ready to perform on the national stage.
