“Early detection saves lives”: Midwest women urged to get checked for breast cancer

A Geraldton cafe is embracing all things purple on Thursday to raise money for Breast Cancer Care WA.

Teaming up with the Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kai Lani Cafe is hosting a fundraiser among the bright surrounds of the Geraldton foreshore to support Purple Bra Day.

Special purple cupcakes are on the menu from 9am-10.30am, with proceeds donated to Breast Cancer Care WA.

Founder and patron Dr Ros Worthington, who will give a short talk at the event on Thursday morning, said all money raised on the day would be injected back into Mid West services.

“If you aren’t well and you can’t afford it, we get you to Perth for your treatment,” she said.

“All our services are free.

“It’s important people know how to access support, especially in regional areas.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women, with an estimated 19,802 Australian women discovering they have the life-threatening disease every year, according to Cancer Australia.

MWCCI CEO Joanne Fabling urged Mid West women to get checked.

“Early detection saves lives,” she said.

“It’s a responsibility of all of us to support a cause like this because there is always going to be the need for more research and development to support women going through breast cancer.”

Purple Bra Day has a distinctly West Australian flavour, with most other breast cancer organisations associating with the colour pink.
