Beheaded tiger shark found washed up on Beresford foreshore, locals concerned about the nature of the carcass

A headless tiger shark was found washed up on Beresford foreshore on Friday morning, leaving residents concerned about the carcass’ origins and the safety of beachgoers. The shark was recorded at about 3m long and was found by residents after it washed up on shore. The City of Greater Geraldton collected the carcass from the Beresford shoreline after it was notified. City of Geraldton acting CEO Fiona Norling said the city consulted the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development before removing the shark carcass. “Following consultation with Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development personnel, city teams promptly removed the carcass and had it taken to Meru Waste Management Facility,” she said. “If community members come across sick or injured wildlife, please call Wildcare Helpline on 9474 9055.” Once DPIRD was notified of the headless shark, a spokesperson thanked the city for removing the carcass promptly. “DPIRD encourages fishers to carefully release all unwanted fish immediately to the water, unharmed, while all retained fish should be dispatched humanely, and all fish offal disposed of in a responsible manner,” a DPIRD spokesperson said. “All fishers are encouraged to be considerate of other beach and water users.” How the carcass washed up on the shoreline with no head is unknown.
