Three people have spent the night stranded on an island off the Carnarvon coast after their boat broke down.

Police received a report of a vessel experiencing mechanical issues just north of Digby Point about 1.30am last night.

It is understood two men and one woman were forced to abandon the boat and stay on Bernier Island, about 28 nautical miles from Carnarvon, while waiting to be rescued.

According to police, the trio were uninjured and were waiting to be collected by a Sea and Rescue Service.
