A tyre fire at a property south of Perth has prompted a HAZMAT alert on Tuesday afternoon, with “plumes” of toxic smoke reported.
DFES issued a HAZMAT general warning for the area between Rapids Road, Utley Road, Polo Road and north of Wattle Road in Serpentine at 2.13pm.
The fire itself is burning at the intersection of Wattle Road and Rapids Road, which is located close to the Serpentine townsite.
“A HAZMAT fire at a property involving tyres is producing plumes of smoke in the area,” the warning read.
DFES has advised motorists to avoid the area if planning to travel, and to reduce speeds and “drive carefully” if already at the location.

Emergency services are on the scene and fighting the fire.
WHAT TO DO
- As a precautionary measure, people in the area should remain inside, out of the smoke or fumes, with doors and windows closed. Air conditioners should also be switched off.
