A woman is being airlifted to Perth after being seriously assaulted in a park in South Hedland on Wednesday night.

Police say the woman in her 20s and a man were at a park between Forrest Circle and Mitchie Crescent when a fight broke out between the pair.

The woman was seriously assaulted, and is being airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital for further treatment.

She remains in a serious but stable condition.

South Hedland detectives arrested and charged a 35-year-old Camballin man with aggravated grievous bodily harm.

He is expected to appear in South Hedland Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Detectives are appealing for anyone with information, or who may have witnessed the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Anyone with dash-cam or CCTV footage of the area at the time can report online.
