Matusik Diamonds: Police investigate shocking ram raid after Mt Lawley jewellers was damaged overnight

A family-run diamond jewellers on one of Perth’s major roads has been targeted in an early morning ram raid. Authorities rushed to the scene after the store’s alarm sounded at Matusik Diamond Jewellers on Beaufort Street, in Mt Lawley, about 4.10am on Wednesday. “Police attended to find extensive damage to the front of the premises believed to have been caused by a vehicle,” a police spokesperson said. It is unclear if anything has been stolen. Deeane Matusik said the business — which is owned by her parents — had been in her family for over 45 years and said she was “shocked”. “It’s unfair and terrible that it’s happened, I’m a little bit angry but grateful at least no one was in the shop at the time to get hurt … that’s the most important thing,” she told The West. “The shop is mum and dad’s life … dad is in his 70s now and takes pride in this business, and he loves it so much he won’t walk away. “There’s a deep love for what they do and for the shop and the community and the life they built.” Owner Jan Matusik said the store had built a community amongst people who frequent Mt Lawley. “We build up a relationship with so many people in the area, I’ll get them a coffee or if someone comes in and they’re feeling sad, we’ll have a quick cuddle,” she said. “That’s old school and that’s what we’ve built on … it’s sad that we’re confronted with this sort of thing nowadays.” Multiple police officers — including forensic officers — were at the store on Wednesday morning, probing the scene for clues and speaking with witnesses. Shocking photographs show the store’s front roller doors completely smashed, with broken glass and debris scattered on the floor.
