The body found in a burnt-out car following a police pursuit in Tasmania has been formally identified as belonging to an alleged gunman who was on the run for two weeks.

Tasmania Police professional standards are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 33-year-old Robert George Greig.

Mr Greig was wanted over a shooting incident on September 26 in the state's south in which two police cars containing officers were fired upon as they travelled to an alleged domestic violence incident.

Police spotted Mr Greig's Holden Colorado 4WD being driven on October 10 in the southeast, deploying several units and a helicopter.
