Caleb Leriano: SA Police apply for extradition of Perth man over alleged murder of young Adelaide chef

A Perth man has been arrested over the alleged murder of an Adelaide chef after his injured body was found inside the wreck of a car crash on Wednesday. South Australia major crime detectives, with assistance from the WA Police homicide squad, arrested a Perth man, 22, over the death of 24-year-old Caleb Leriano in the Adelaide suburb of Morphett Vale. The man, from Perth’s northern suburb of Brabham, is listed to face Perth Magistrates Court on Friday where an application will be made to extradite him to South Australia on a murder charge. The death of Mr Leriano was initially suspected of being linked to a car crash after his red 2003 BMW sedan crashed into a power pole about 1.30am. But police later revealed that his life-threatening injuries were the result of an alleged assault prior to the crash. The 24-year-old was the sole occupant of the car and died at the scene. SA Police said Mr Leriano drove his BMW to the vicinity of Saphire Reserve, in Morphett Vale, for a “planned meeting” early Wednesday before he was found injured inside his car. “The reason for that meeting and what occurred is being investigated,” police said. Mr Leriano’s father, Mike told 7NEWS that his son was a “a jovial young man from Kenya who was pursuing his Australian dream”. “I love him and I miss him,” he said. SA Police’s Det. Insp. Andrew Macrae, officer in charge of major crime investigation branch, thanked the WA Police homicide squad for their help with the arrest. “We are very pleased to have been able to share today’s developments with Caleb’s family,’’ he said. “I wish to formally acknowledge the dedicated and sustained efforts of investigators over recent days.” SA Police released images of Mr Leriano’s car, which had minor damage to its front as a result of the crash. Police continue to appeal for CCTV or dash-cam around the area where Mr Leriano died, which was reportedly only 100m away from his home.
