A 25-year-old man has been accused of murdering a 10-month-old boy who died in hospital.

The boy was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition in the early hours of Friday from a home at Warrane in Hobart's eastern suburbs.

Daniel John Ridgers was charged on Sunday with causing grievous bodily harm to a child.

His charge was upgraded to murder after the boy died, Tasmania Police said in a statement on Monday morning.

Ridgers briefly appeared in Hobart Magistrates Court and didn't enter a plea to the charge or apply for bail.

He was remanded in custody and is expected to reappear in early January via video link.

Ridgers answered "yes" when asked by Magistrate Michael Daly to confirm his name.
