Wade Corbett: Passenger told to pay more than $17,000 for forcing Jetstar plane to turn back to Perth

A flight menace whose behaviour forced a Sydney-bound passenger plane to return to Perth has been ordered to pay more than $8630 in fuel costs. Wade Corbett, 34, was also fined $9000 by Perth Magistrates Court for being disruptive on the Jetstar flight in September last year. More than 150 passengers were left stranded in Perth overnight after the flight was turned around due to Corbett’s behaviour, which included locking himself in a toilet and refusing to leave. He was accused of intimidatory behaviour towards cabin staff when he was refused more alcohol on board. It was then alleged he refused to fasten his seatbelt when asked and when approached by the pilot he locked himself in a toilet and refused to leave. The pilot had to dump more than $20,000 in fuel to allow the plane to land safely back in Perth. Last Thursday, Corbett pleaded guilty to one count of disorderly behaviour on an aircraft and one count of failure to comply with safety instructions. Outside court, Federal Police Acting Superintendent Shona Davis said the case should serve as a warning to others “that criminal behaviour on board can come at a heavy cost to the offender”. “It’s far simpler to obey the directions of airline staff than cause unnecessary issues, which can end up hitting you in the hip pocket,” she said.
