Cold weather continue for the Capes

As the winter solstice comes and goes, the South West continues to experience a the chills as a vigorous cold front makes its way across the coast.

While the Capes were saved from the damaging winds experienced in Albany and Denmark this week, cold and gusty showers will continue through to the weekend.

Temperatures will peak at 19 degrees in Busselton and Margaret River while Yallingup and Dunsborough will peak at 20 degrees.

The icy temperatures follow weekend rain which saw Cape Naturalist drenches, copping 22.6mm by the end of the weekend.

Despite the days growing longer thanks to the passing of the Winter Solstice on Monday the Bureau of Meteorology warned locals not to expect warm weather just yet.

According to BOM cold waters surrounding the region play a large part in determining the temperature more than a shining sun.

“Water cools down and warms up much more slowly than air, so sea surface temperatures continue to decrease around Australia into spring,” The Bureau says.

“Sea ice around Antarctica reaches its peak extent in late September, nearly three months after the darkest days of winter and close to the spring equinox.

“For southern parts of the country, all that cold water and ice means that even as the sun begins to warm the Australian land mass, southerly winds can still transport cold air over Australia, leading to late-season cold spells.”
