There is heavy traffic congestion after a blaze raged next to a major Perth highway.

The bushfire, reported by Emergency WA about 5:16pm, erupted next to Tonkin Highway in Cullacabardee.

People were advised in an alert issued about 5.57pm the fire “threat was reduced”. Anyone in the area is urged to remain alert.

According to Main Roads, the fire resulted in the closure of Tonkin Highway northbound after Hepburn Avenue, before being reopened about 5.25pm.

Traffic is still heavy and is backed up to Reid Highway.

Incident response, police and The Department of Fire and Emergency Services attended the scene.
