The South West Slammers couldn’t celebrate their special milestone in fine style with double losses to Cockburn Cougars on Friday night in round 16 of the NBL1 West season.
Celebrating the Slammers 30th anniversary since their 1996 State Basketball League triumph each side wore specially designed replica jerseys along with past players and coaches in attendance.
The Slammers men’s side were unable to replicate last weekend’s win, going down to the Cougars by 17 points.
The Cougars flew out of the gates with an early 15-point advantage at the first break with the Slammers unable to reel in the margin to finish 95-78.
Imports Philmon Gebrhiwet (26 points and seven rebounds) and Jhaylon Martinez (11 points and seven rebounds) both continued their strong form while captain Pharell Keats filled the stat sheet with eight points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals.
The women’s team’s down run of form extended to nine successive defeats with the Cougars taking home a 28-point victory.
The Slammers started strongly in the opening quarter with a five-point lead heading into the second, but the Cougars gradually worked their way into the game.
The Cougars only held a two-point lead with one quarter to play but the Slammers were blown out of the water in the last quarter as the away team piled on the scoring to win 98-70.
Centre Melanie Hoyt was again instrumental leading the way with 21 points and six rebounds alongside Hana Lacey-Rameka who provided 17 points and eight rebounds.
Courtney Bayliss came off the bench and chipped in with 13 points and four assists while Casey Paea dropped nine points plus four assists and five steals.
The Slammers will host Eastern Suns on Friday night at Eaton Recreation Centre for their last home game of the season in the penultimate round.
The men’s side will officially finish in last position once again, while the women still have a chance to jump off the bottom with Willetton Tigers only one win ahead of them in second last position.
