Bunbury is the fifth most generous city in Australia, according to a report by GoFundMe. The ranking is based on donations made per capita, with Bunbury behind only Mandurah in Western Australia. Bunbury was ranked two places higher than its position last year and four places higher than 2021. Bundaberg topped the rankings in the country, followed by Toowoomba and Hervey Bay to complete the trifecta for Queensland. Mandurah and Bunbury took fourth and fifth respectively and were the only WA locations to make the list. One man who has seen the generosity of those in Bunbury and the South West first-hand is Salvos South West Captain Mark Schatz. He said the Bunbury community was full of people wanting to help others. “I think ultimately, like myself, we love our community and we want to see the best for everyone within our community, so I think it’s a genuine love for each other that we have,” he said. “Ultimately, we know people are doing it tough and we know that people have been struggling to make ends meet across our community and so we want to see the best.” Capt. Schatz said having a generous society meant everyone benefited. “When people are generous, it makes the community a lot stronger and it stops people from doing things in a desperate state,” he said. “When we live in a generous community, our communities are stronger, they’re healthier, they’re better.” A total of 1.4 million donations were made to Australian GoFundMe fundraisers this year with 9.2 million Australian donations amounting to more than $820 million going nationally and internationally. Internationally, Ireland was once again named the most generous country for a fifth year running, with Galway its top city.
