Opinion: Give your feedback on the health of our community as we thank our vollies

As we head into the end of the year, it’s a fitting time to reflect on what makes our community strong — and one thing that stands out is how we look after each other.
Health and wellbeing aren’t just about hospitals and exercise; it’s about feeling connected, supported, and valued within our community.
That’s why the Shire of Broome is developing a new Public Health Plan — a roadmap for how we can support the health and wellbeing of our community. The plan takes a broad view of health, recognising that things like recreation, nutrition, access to services, and social connection all play a vital role in our collective wellbeing.
A key part of that picture is volunteering. Thank a Volunteer Day last week was a great reminder that volunteers are the heartbeat of Broome. From sports clubs to emergency services — our volunteers give their time and energy to help others. In doing so, they not only strengthen our community but also their own sense of purpose.
On a personal note, volunteering has always been an important part of my life and one of the ways I’ve built lasting connections. I see firsthand the difference volunteers make every day — often quietly and without recognition — and I want to sincerely thank each and every person who gives their time in Broome. Even if you think it’s just a small job, it all adds up to something extraordinary.
Volunteering is one of the most powerful ways we can contribute to the place we call home. Every hour given, every small act of service, creates a ripple effect that strengthens our community. Whether it’s coaching a junior team or lending a hand at a local event, these efforts build a more connected and resilient Broome.
I encourage everyone to get involved where they can. Your time and talents can make a real and lasting difference.
As we continue working together to shape Broome, we’d really love to hear from you. The Public Health Plan Survey is now open on the Shire’s website — it’s your chance to share what matters most to you when it comes to community health and wellbeing. Every bit of feedback helps us build a healthier, more connected Broome — a true future for everyone.
