With a foggy day in Broome last Friday, was it a message from above to bet on a grey horse in the Cable Beach Caravan Park Cup at the Broome race meeting?

There just happened to be a grey in the field, called Deception Game, which had won at its previous start. So the weather gods were right on the money.

In a tight, tense finish, the grey, driven to the line by cups king jockey Peter Hall, got up to win by a short neck.

With visiting Perth jockeys Peter Knuckey and Chris Parnham in attendance, the Friday meeting was bound to provide excitement, and the ladies’ Fashions on the Field added large amounts of colour and poise.

Honours on the day were evenly spread, with the first race taken out by long shot Weona Brute.

Trainer Steele Casey has obviously found the key to improving it's form, as it won by four lengths after leading all the way.

Dance Cockey danced it’s way to the winning post to give trainer Carey Martin another win with the Galah four-year-old, while in the third race, Desert Thorn, which was slow into stride from the get go, came from last to take the prize.

A heady ride by Colin Haddon, gave the Jim Enright stable a third win of the season.

The performance of the day came in race four, when the Sean/Jake Casey yard-produced Stevie’s Wonder, unraced for 10 months, had a come from behind win. The son of Pierro, carrying 62kg top weight, missed the start and was a conspicuous last in running, but under patient running by Peter Knuckey literally sprouted wings to get home by half a length.

Ombudsman made a race of it in the fifth event and gave trainer Darryn Pateman and jockey Jessica Gray more points in the Leading Trainer and Jockey competition.

In winning race six, connections of Deception Game will now have to decide on whether to run in either or both of the forthcoming cup races.

The final event of the day, saw another outsider salute the judge. Nevarda, which had not won for 728 days, sat on the pace and won by a length, giving veteran trainer Kevin Collins a welcome change of luck.
