Authorities have closed several popular beaches in Broome after a confirmed crocodile sighting at Reddell Beach on Wednesday afternoon.

A 1.5-metre estuarine (saltwater) crocodile was spotted at approximately 12:40pm on April 29, prompting an immediate response from local officials.

The Shire of Broome has since closed Reddell Beach, Entrance Point, and Simpsons Beach as a precaution.

The closures are expected to remain in place for at least 24 hours while the situation is assessed.

Rangers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions’ Parks and Wildlife Service are actively patrolling the area to monitor the crocodile and ensure public safety.

Residents and visitors are being urged to avoid the affected beaches and remain vigilant in surrounding coastal areas.

Authorities have also asked the public to report any further crocodile sightings to DBCA Parks and Wildlife Service Broome on 9195 5500.

Officials continue to stress the importance of staying “crocwise” in the Kimberley region, where saltwater crocodiles are known to inhabit waterways and coastal zones.

Public safety remains the top priority as monitoring efforts continue.
