Bali fire: Second major fire in Bali within 24 hours after rubbish tip erupts into flames

Another major fire has hit the holiday hot spot of Bali, less than 24 hours after a popular Seminyak restaurant burned to the ground.

A rubbish yard on Sunset Road in Legian erupted into flames shortly after 11pm on Monday night.

Vision shared from Balinese locals show plumes of smoke flooding the air as the pile of rubbish is seen burning.

Emergency services raced to the scene soon after the fire commenced and were able to control the blaze, with the fire continuing to smoulder for a while.

They remained at the scene on Tuesday morning and are continuing their efforts to fully extinguish the blaze.

Despite individuals residing in the site, it has been said that no one was injured in the fire.

One Bali community support group revealed on Tuesday that 200 residents had been affected by the blaze — with many families losing everything they own due to the rubbish fire.

Individuals on the Indonesian island have reported that “the skies smell like smoke and ash” throughout the Legian and Seminyak areas.

The rubbish fire occurred around 800 metres away from Australian Independent School (AIS), an international school offering its 350 K-12 students an education based on the Australian curriculum.

One Bali expat shared on social media that parents of AIS students had been notified that the wind is blowing away from the school and that classes would continue as scheduled — however, windows and doors to the school will remain closed due to heavy smoke.

Aerial images shared by Bali community pages showed the fire continued smouldering on Tuesday and smoke was still billowing above the area.

The cause of the fire and extent of damage is not yet known.

It follows two separate vacant-land fires on Sunset Road this week, with two smaller scrub fires breaking out along the popular road last Thursday.
