Despite finishing on the podium for both canoeing and kayaking at the Tokyo Olympics, the 27-year-old failed to qualify for the finals in either event at the world championships.

“Sometimes the water wins, sometimes you get unlucky, sometimes it comes down to a few centimetres and a tiny error is a huge penalty. But that’s sport! I’ll keep coming back,” Fox said of her defeats on Instagram.

And come back she did.

Fox advanced to the final of the championships’ extreme slalom, which was introduced by the ICF in 2015 and is billed as “a combination of all canoeing’s white water disciplines”.

In the final, Fox defeated German Elena Apel, American Evy Leibfarth and Naemi Braendle of Switzerland to claim first place.

Fox said it was a “crazy end” to the championships.

The Fox family had plenty to celebrate – Jess’ younger sister Noemie was the only Aussie to qualify for the final of the women’s canoe event, where she finished sixth.

The younger Fox sister also reached the semi-finals for the extreme slalom and kayaking events.

Jess Fox’s world championship win is a significant boon for her Olympic career – extreme slalom is set to be introduced as an event at the 2024 Paris Games, so could provide Fox with an opportunity to add even more silverware to her already impressive trophy cabinet.

Fox won gold in the women’s canoe event at the Tokyo Olympics, as well as bronze in the women’s kayak, making her the only athlete to finish on the podium in both canoeing and kayaking at the most recent Games.

The gold medal was the first of her career. She previously took home silver and bronze in the women’s kayaking event at the London and Rio games, respectively.
