Big fines for illegal firewood clearing, collecting

Residents are on notice they face serious penalties for illegally clearing trees for firewood from thick forest inland from Margaret River.

While the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River showed in February it could collect evidence to hand to the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions for prosecution, some residents have ignored the warning.

Margaret River woman Isabelle Greenfield she was concerned to see trees cut down in State forest.

“Each time I go walking, more trees have been cut,” she said.

“I am not sure if people know what they do is illegal and damaging to the forest?”

DBCA was contacted for comment. The maximum penalty for clearing without a permit is $250,000.
