Ash Taylor has taken a huge step on the road to NRL redemption, earning a one-year contract with the New Zealand Warriors.

Taylor showed massive potential playing for the Gold Coast Titans early in his NRL career, beating Nathan Cleary to claim the Dally M Rookie Of The Year award in 2016.

Underperforming on big money, Taylor’s Titans contract was not renewed at the end of 2021, with the club looking likely to structure its spine around AJ Brimson, Jayden Campbell and Toby Sexton this season.

Taylor took a massive pay cut to take a train-and-trial contract with the Warriors in October, but on Friday his quest to break back into the NRL full-time began gathering steam.

The Warriors have been impressed by Taylor since he arrived at the club and have opted to upgrade him to their top 30 squad for 2022.

“We’re excited to confirm Ash is staying with us. He has been a great addition since joining the club and has more than met our expectations,” said Warriors general manager of football Craig Hodges.

“He has added so much with his training ethic, enthusiasm and his all-round contribution.”

Taylor will now compete with Shaun Johnson, Kodi Nikorima and Chanel Harris-Tevita for two spots in the halves across the ditch this season.

Warriors captain Tohu Harris said he looked forward to working closely with Taylor.

“Ash has fitted in well with our group and we’re really enjoying having him around,” Harris said.

“He has given us an experienced voice and has added to the competition in our halves.”
