Young talent rewarded
Albany Little Athletics Club collected a swag of medals at the State Country Championships held in Margaret River earlier this month.
Albany had 32 competitors take part and Denmark Little Athletics Club also sent members to the three-day tournament.
After a big couple of days, Albany finished with 99 medals in total, 20 gold medals, 38 silver and 41 bronze.
Under their own banner, Denmark won 10 gold medals and one silver.
Charlotte Mitrovski dominated the under-9 sprint and hurdle races, winning gold in all of her events.
Riley Robertson produced a great effort trailing the field at the start of the 800m under-13 race before climbing over the top of his opponents in the final few metres to take home gold.
Stanley Cooper was in the under-11 division and collected a bronze medal after beating his previous personal best by 4m, throwing a total of 21.36m in javelin.
Rory Wolfe secured gold in high jump, his favourite event, to beat the silver medallist by 7cm.
Albany Little Athletics Club president Naomi Cooper said the meeting was a great success.
“I’m really surprised with the turnout of kids that went across,” she said.
“To get over 30 kids to travel to an event four hours away is a huge effort.
“We were one really big team, the team environment was amazing across the weekend.
“We cheered each other on all weekend and stuck together and sat together as a team in our Albany uniforms.”
