Zen Shepherd and Lily Kuret claimed victories in the under-18 boys and girls divisions as grommets from around the Great Southern were treated to terrific waves for the annual Junior Wavefest on Saturday. The Albany Boardriders’ prime junior competition was held at Mutton Bird Beach on Saturday with a total of 40 surfers hitting the water. There was some great surfing on display, highlighted by close battles in the under-16 boys and under-14 boys finals. Albany Boardriders president David Beeck said it was a wonderful day of surfing from the young talent in the region. “We had a great day, huge turnout and I think we picked the day of the month and no easterly,” Beeck said. “There was a really good bank and great waves. “We did get a bit of rain, but we could put up with that. “The under-16 boys and under-14 boys were really good. “The under-16s had the most entries and they did three heats, two semis and a final and the standard of surfing was really good.” The under-18 divisions went straight into finals and Zen Shepherd proved too strong in the 30-minute final to claim the Wavefest crown. He defeated Zephyr Simmons, Jack Kuret, Tyce Shepherd and Luke Anderson in the five-man boys decider. Lily Kuret also emerged victories, powering her way to the under-18 girls title over Gemma Moir, Kleo Proudfoot and Kelarni Lloyd. Tyce Shepherd was a stand-out across the day and he carved his way to an impressive win in the under-16 boys final. He finished with the highest heat score in that final and also claimed the best barrel across the day. In the final Tyce Shepherd downed Kalgan Simmons and Zephyr Simmons. The under-16 girls title went to Clare Hadlow after she defeated Maisie Mitchell and Lily Kuret. Kalgan Simmons showed his potential with a strong win in the under-14 boys final over Sammy Williams and Jack Williams. The under-14 girls crown was won by Annabelle Reddington who beat Maisie Mitchell and Millie Barker in the final. Joshua Mitchell reigned supreme in the under-12 boys over Freddie Creek and Jed Abrahams while Gretel Tinley downed Ruby Clews and Reddington in the under-12 girls final. Creek won the push-in division from Jarrad Shuttleworth and Abrahams.
