Woonings’ triple treat widens gap
Six goals helped Albany-Bayswater edge closer to the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s reserves league title, winning their round 14 clash with Royals last Saturday afternoon.
With the league title still undecided, Albany-Bayswater produced a four-goal opening half.
Holding a 4-2 lead at half-time, Albany-Bayswater continued to press forward and create opportunities and they were rewarded again as they finished comfortable 6-2 winners.
Guy Woonings was the star for Albany-Bayswater with a hat-trick and he was well supported by James Opuni (two goals).
Woonings and Opuni have been key figures in Albany-Bayswater chalking up 10 wins from their 14 league games, which leaves them on top of the standings heading into the final two rounds.
Justin Taylor and Jonathon Darby were the goal scorers for Royals.
A waterlogged pitch forced the round 14 game between the second-placed Polonia and Phoenix to be rescheduled while Caledonians forfeited to Albany Rovers. Old Boys clinched the men’s social/vets league title last Tuesday following their 14-0 romp over Mt Barker.
After netting five in the first half, Old Boys piled on nine second-half goals as they cruised to victory, led by William Macdonald (five goals).
It was a 13th straight win for Old Boys, who opened up a nine-point buffer over nearest rivals The Vets with two rounds remaining.
The Vets were 8-0 winners against Bayswater while a hat-trick from Bodhi Davies guided Denmark to a 7-0 result over Cross Keys United.
There was also a hat-trick from Sam Jackson as his Rovers Social beat Polonia Eagles 4-1.
In men’s premier league action, recently crowned league champions Polonia prevailed 6-2 against a Caledonians side that finished with nine players while Phoenix secured a 3-0 result in their meeting with Albany Rovers.
Laura Hunt’s sole goal was the difference between Polonia and Port Albany in round 14 of the women’s premier league.
Having already stitched up the league trophy, Denmark won 4-0 against Royals and Phoenix coasted to a big 6-0 scoreline in their fixture with Caledonians, as Chelsea Roth netted a hat-trick.
