Woman in her 20s airlifted to hospital with serious injuries, children escape without injury in highway crash

A woman in her 20s is in a serious condition after her car crashed into a tree on Albany Highway near Cranbrook in the Great Southern on Saturday morning. Several children in the car, including an infant, escaped serious injury but the woman was flown by the RAC rescue helicopter to Albany after suffering serious injuries in the single-vehicle crash. Emergency services responded to a triple-0 call at 4.41am after a crash on Albany Highway near Yonka Road, where a Hyundai Staria left the road and hit a tree. The RAC rescue helicopter was called to airlift a woman to Albany Health Campus while three other patients were taken to Plantagenet Hospital for observation. A St John WA spokeswoman said the injured woman had serious but not life-threatening injuries. A police spokesman said the woman may have suffered a spinal injury and there were several children in the car when it crashed. Crew from Tambellup volunteer fire and emergency services attended to assist St John WA and police with the transfer of the patient and traffic management. Albany Highway was closed between Sturry Road and Yonka Road for more than an hour while emergency services dealt with the incident. The highway was reopened about 7.50am.
