Woman in custody after allegedly damaging glass frontage of three York Street businesses

Police have arrested a woman in her 30s after she allegedly smashed the front windows of three retail businesses along York Street with rocks. Art gallery Blush, South Coast Woodworks Gallery and The Bath Tub all sustained damage to their front store window on the night of December 28 or in the early hours of December 29. Two windows at South Coast Woodworks Gallery were damaged with a rock still embedded in the window on Friday morning. The woman allegedly picked up a sign left out overnight and threw it through the front glass doors of The Bath Tub. It is estimated the damage to Blush ranges between $1500 to $1600 while South Coast Woodworks Gallery has sustained damage to a total of $1800. Blush co-owner Angie Fryer-Smith said the damage was disappointing to see at this time of year and the business would have to wait two weeks to get the damage fixed properly. “It’s disappointing to see and there’s been relatively few incidents since the nightclub closed,” she said. “It’s not a good time to get people out to fix things, especially the glass people said they are really busy and they won’t be able to come out for two weeks, but they’re going to put a temporary solution on it.” Police have charged the woman with one count of criminal damage or destruction of property for the damage at The Bath Tub, but are continuing to investigate further charges for the other two damaged businesses. She is expected to appear in Katanning Magistrates Court on February 6.
