Local junior Cooper Filipowski has produced a scintillating final day of golf to claim the prestigious Wittenoom Cup at Albany Golf Club on Sunday.

After hitting 72 on the first day, Cooper managed a score of 69 on Sunday to shoot into the equal lead with Esperance Golf Club’s Terry Hayward and Alan Simpson, from AGC, and was victorious following a countback.

Club golf director Ian Redmond said the 15-year-old was believed to be the youngest player to win the cup in its 90-year history.

The weekend’s tournament was the culmination of the 10-day Wittenoom Cup Carnival.

In the Brenda Wittenoom Open, Denmark Country Club’s Christine Randall won with a combined score of 145, beating out Trish Hoile (147) from Lake Karrinyup Country Club and Mt Barker’s Kerry Steicke (147), who had to be separated via a countback. Gross score winners were Andy Carrick (152) of Joondalup Country Club in the men’s and Nedlands Golf Club’s Cath Bellemore (163) in the women’s.

Albany’s Noel Sewell provided a highlight on Saturday when he produced a round of 76 off the stick. Sewell is aged 78 and it is a rarity to score better than your age. Unfortunately, Sewell could only manage 80 on Sunday, leaving him out of the race for the cup.
