Weather warning: Heavy surf conditions, thunderstorms and damaging winds forecast for WA’s south coast

The south coast has been warned to brace for thunderstorms and heavy surf from Monday as a series of strong cold fronts pass over the south-west of the State. The Weather Bureau issued two separate severe weather warnings on Sunday for parts of WA, including Albany and Denmark. The Bureau is forecasting “sustained heavy surf” from late on Monday night until late Wednesday. “A strong front will pass over south-western parts of the State on Monday,” the Bureau said. “This weather system has driven the development of large and powerful waves that will persist into the week. “Significant wave heights exceeding 7m with periods of around 16 seconds are expected in some locations. “Waves will arrive from west to south-westerly directions.” Swells are forecast to reach almost 9m off Albany on Wednesday. A separate weather warning issued later on Sunday advised that the cold front would likely generate thunderstorms and damaging winds on Monday. Damaging wind gusts above 90km/h are possible from late Monday morning over the warning area and may cause damage to homes and property,” the Bureau said. “Damaging wind gusts are more likely along the coast and nearby inland, becoming more isolated further inland. Heavy rainfall exceeding 30mm per hour is also possible in coastal and nearby inland parts of the warning area from late Monday morning. “The cold front is expected to impact the western coast late Monday morning, pushing eastwards into the afternoon. “Significant thunderstorms are possible along the front itself as it reaches the coast, as well as in westerly winds following the passage of the front.
