Ardent Collingwood fan and Albany MP Peter Watson has conceded his team weren’t good enough in last weekend’s AFL grand final.

Mr Watson, who was born in Melbourne, had high hopes for his team heading into the match and tipped them to overcome the West Coast Eagles by 17 points.

Ahead of the game he agreed to the challenge with Albany Advertiser journalist and Eagles fan Toby Hussey that the supporter of the losing team would publicly endorse the winning side.

Now, after one of the most competitive grand finals in years, Mr Watson has paid his dues.

“I congratulate the West Coast Eagles, a tremendous game of footy. Disappointing for Collingwood supporters but great for the West Coast Eagles,” he said.

“Especially for young (Albany local Jeremy McGovern). A great kid. Really pleased to see he played well and showed a lot of courage on the day.

“(Collingwood) just weren’t there on the day (but) we’ll stick together and come back bigger and better next year.”
