WA scientist calls for help funding a study ‘crucial’ to knowing more about native bees in the Stirling Range National Park

A WA scientist wants to undertake “crucial” research into the impact of bushfires on native bees in the Stirling Range National Park. Kit Prendergast is seeking funding to carry out a comprehensive study after a proposal to the Federal Government’s Wildlife and Habitat Bushfire Recovery Program was rejected. Ms Prendergast said she was disappointed by the decision. “The grants were open to anyone; bees weren’t listed as a priority, so I put in a proposal for a non-priority species,” she said. “I think it was rejected because they already had ideas of what was a priority and there was more of a focus on NSW, but I think it was an interaction between politics and awareness about native bees as many people don’t realise there’s bees other than the honey bee.” Ms Prendergast’s research would focus on a national park which had been devastated by bushfires in recent years. The Boxing Day fires, which burnt through more than 40,000ha, followed another significant bushfire event in May 2018. “We don’t know how bees in Australia respond to fire, the impact it has on them, how they respond in post-fire landscapes, so it’s really important to document those changes,” she said. “These are really important research questions that aren’t addressed and aren’t part of any post-fire recovery rehabilitation or research projects.” Ms Prendergast would also look at installing “bee hotels” to encourage the solitary cavity-nesting bees to recolonise burnt land. The native bees do not actually live in these structures, rather the females use them as nesting substrates. There are more than 2000 native bee species in Australia, with 800 of them in WA. Many species are endemic and include the blue-banded bee, leaf-cutter bee, reed bee and masked bee. With most people familiar with the introduced European honey bee, Ms Prendergast said it was sad to see native bees overlooked. “I think it’s devastating they’re neglected when it comes to bushfire recovery and research,” she said. “They’re such important parts of ecosystems and if we don’t look after them, many restoration and rehabilitation ventures might not end up being successful. “Even if you plant the plant, if the pollinators aren’t there, the plants will grow but if they don’t reproduce, when it comes to the next generation, they’re just not going to be there.” Ms Prendergast said the Stirling Range could be home to many bee species. “The region has never been systematically studied but many bees in the Stirling Range are based on ad-hoc collecting studies,” she said. “Imagine in the Stirling Range, where there’s hardly any roads and agricultural-threatening processes, the species diversity will be incredible in areas that aren’t burnt. It is a rich wealth of diversity very special to Australian ecosystems. With their close association with flora, bees tend to be some of the most important pollinators.” The biggest obstacle standing in the way of Ms Prendergast’s research is funding. She is seeking $100,000. “Because the research is quite involved, it can’t be done without funding. I’ve had lots of people think it needs to be done but no monetary help yet,” she said. Ms Prendergast wants to carry out the study between September and March, when bees are most active.
