WA records more than 6000 new COVID-19 cases with 43 in Great Southern

Forty-three new local COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the Great Southern region on Wednesday as WA recorded more than 6000 new daily infections for the first time since the start of the pandemic and its fifth Omicron-related death.

WA Health confirmed 6062 new cases of COVID-19 had been reported across the State in the 24 hours to 8pm on Tuesday.

This pushed WA’s active caseload to 28,772 and the Great Southern region to 192.

A woman in her 80s who tested positive for COVID has died, it was also confirmed on Wednesday.

The woman was a resident at an aged care home when she contracted the virus and she was transferred to hospital.

According to Federal Health Department records, this is the first COVID-related death in an aged-care facility in WA for the entire pandemic.

It comes after another woman in her 80s was revealed to have died with COVID on Sunday.

On Wednesday, there were 123 people with COVID in hospital and two patients in intensive care.

There were 112 hospitalisations and five people in ICU on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, there were 18 COVID-19 exposure sites listed across Albany, Denmark, Mount Barker, Bremer Bay and Walpole on the Healthy WA website.
