Victorian star Jarod Waters secured his maiden National Modified Sedan Title after an epic 40-lap final at Albany’s Attwell Park Speedway on Sunday night.

Waters started from position 15 on the grid in the championship decider and turned his campaign around dramatically to replicate the feat his younger brother Cameron achieved in 2018.

Despite setting the quickest time in Friday night’s qualifying session, Waters struggled in the heat races on Saturday and languished in 21st position on points after night one in the 47-car field.

He managed to be one of the 16 automatic qualifiers into Sunday night’s A-main following the final round of heat races and from the moment the green flag dropped he was on the charge.

Waters rocketed his way into the top five and picked off the heavy-hitters.

After 17 laps he was in second place in pursuit of WA’s Luke Fraser, who had started the final from pole position.

There was a restart at that point and Luke Fraser led the field away as he and Waters shot clear to begin a terrific battle for top spot.

Waters hit the lead for the first time on lap 26 and soon afterwards the reigning national champion Brock Atkins slowed on the top of the track, ending his title defence and caused another stoppage.

Despite a moment on the restart when his car failed to fire into gear, Waters controlled the final 13 laps to secure his first national title.

He crossed the line 3.305 seconds ahead of a gallant Luke Fraser, while Queenslander Joel Berkley stormed around the top of the track in the dying stages for third place.

WA pair Matt Noakes and Branden Fraser rounded out the top five, while Albany’s Laurie Dowsett was the best of the locals in sixth place.

Complete coverage of the national title and the winners of the super sedan and late model feature races will appear in Thursday’s Advertiser.
