A goal in each half of Saturday night’s tense contest with Polonia has guided Albany-Bayswater to their fifth win of the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s premier league competition.

In a match filled with drama, five Albany-Bayswater players received yellow cards but their side remain the only undefeated team in the league after the 2-1 result at the North Road soccer grounds.

Albany-Bayswater were only able to field nine players in the round 7 fixture, but goals from Jeffrey Ledwith and Daniele Maggi, who both received yellow cards as well, ensured their side would win against the odds.

Maggi and Ledwith were both strong contributors in the win, while Tyler Nastasi was resolute in goal despite his team being under regular attack.

The result pushed Albany-Bayswater six points clear on top of the standings as their strong campaign continued. Cameron Spence scored Polonia’s goal, which came in the second half.

In the other men’s premier league fixture, Phoenix lifted themselves off the bottom of the table with a 1-0 win over Albany Rovers.

Little separated the two sides for the majority of the 90 minutes but a first-half strike from Bronson Dekker proved the difference in the end as Phoenix beat Rovers for the second time in a month.

In the men’s reserves played last Saturday, Royals finished handsome 5-0 winners over Rovers to record their first victory of the season.

Trevor Pocock and Ben Scott each scored a double as Royals extended their 2-0 half-time lead.

Albany-Bayswater downed Polonia Eagles 1-0 in the other game.

Last Tuesday night in round 7 of the men’s social/vets league, Denmark won a high-scoring encounter with Polonia 5-3 with the help of four goals from Callum Gar-land.

League leaders Old Boyz made it six wins on the trot after beating Mt Barker 6-2, Rovers Vets prevailed 3-2 over Rovers Social, and Crosskeys scored a 1-0 win against Albany-Bayswater.

Meanwhile in the women’s league A, Phoenix played very well to force a 1-1 draw with Denmark, who had won five straight games leading into round 7.

Polonia beat Mt Barker United 6-0 and Port Albany also slammed six goals past Caledonians.
