Two people taken to hospital after Mazda was destroyed in three-car smash that closed Albany Highway in McKail

Two people have amazingly escaped serious injury after they were involved in a serious three-car crash that closed Albany Highway in both directions for more than an hour on Thursday. The two occupants of a Mazda sedan that was crunched from behind and in the side during the smash, were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The sedan sustained heavy damage in the crash, with the passenger side door bent in and the boot destroyed, and had to be towed away. At about 5.05pm on Thursday emergency services rushed to the crash scene at the intersection of Albany Highway and Edinburgh Road in McKail. Police say the Mazda was travelling south on Albany Highway and had stopped to turn right into Edinburgh Road when it was rear-ended by a Mercedes. That collision spun the Mazda into oncoming traffic in the northbound lane of the highway and a four-wheel-drive slammed into the passenger side of the turning car. One person in the Mazda was trapped and had to be freed from the vehicle by firefighters before they were taken to Albany Health Campus. A male teenager was also taken by St John WA to Albany Health Campus with minor injuries. The Mercedes was also towed from the scene while the four-wheel-drive was driven away. Albany Highway near the intersection of Edinburgh Road was closed in both directions until 6.35pm as the scene was cleaned up. Albany police said their inquiries into the crash were continuing.
