Two new faces in race for Shire of Plantagenet council

The Shire of Plantagenet looks set to stick with the familiar come October 16, with all but two candidates already sitting on the council. Five seats are up for grabs this year, set to be contested by six candidates in the local government elections. New candidates teacher Rosie Brown and Mt Barker Community College principal Andrew Fraser may oust one of the four incumbents. Deputy Shire president Jon Oldfield and councillors Len Handasyde, Brett Bell and Sue Etherington are all hoping to keep their seats on the council for another four years. Cr Jeff Moir has decided to step down and is not re-contesting his seat. Name: Andrew Fraser Profession: Mt Barker Community College principal My experience in dealing with young people and service groups gives me a good grounding of issues I can represent on the council. My background in school administration affords me an understanding of regulations and process that may support the contributions I could give. Name: Brett Bell Profession: Retired I strive to ensure better community consultation; transparency; support for aged care, disability requirements, outlying communities, sporting and volunteer groups; commonsense planning; protection of our environment; and ensuring rates are set at realistic levels. Name: Jon Oldfield Profession: Farmer The decisions I have made in council are always well researched and I make decisions that are for the long-term benefit of our residents. I don't make decisions that are driven to achieve short-term popularity for myself. Name: Len Handasyde Profession: Farmer I would like to continue representing you and I believe I have more to contribute to the process of local government in this Shire. If elected I will continue to advocate for good and accountable local government. Name: Rosie Brown Profession: Teacher I believe Plantagenet’s population is becoming young family oriented and we need a voice to help achieve things around town that would be beneficial for younger children and families alike. Name: Sue Etherington Profession: Retired I believe in open and accountable local government. If asked a question, I will find an answer as soon as possible and have endeavoured to do the best I can for all residents and ratepayers.
