Freak crash: Man fights for life after colliding with tree on Denmark highway then being hit by passing car

A 58-year-old man remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit of Royal Perth Hospital on Friday after he was hit by a passing motorist in a freak accident on Thursday morning, west of Denmark. A fallen tree on South Coast Highway in William Bay led to the crash, involving two cars. The horror incident happened at about 5.40am near the intersection of Mardo Road, about 16km from the popular coastal town in the Great Southern. A Mercedes Benz panel van collided with a tree while travelling west on South Coast Highway. Police say the 58-year-old driver exited his crashed vehicle but was struck by a Ford Falcon sedan, driven by another 58-year-old man, which was travelling in the opposite direction. The injured man was rushed under priority conditions to Denmark Health Service by St John WA. He was then airlifted via Royal Flying Doctor Service in a critical condition and taken to Royal Perth Hospital. On Friday afternoon a RPH spokesman said the 58-year-old’s condition was critical in ICU. The second driver was uninjured. Officers from the major crash unit are now investigating the incident. The crash forced the closure of South Coast Highway between Kordabup and McLeod roads before it was reopened after 10am. Markings have been made on the straight stretch of road where the crash happened and the tree that was across the highway has been cut up and removed.
