Trymain Paul Maxton, 23, faces court charged with attempted murder of ex-WAFL player Russell Wynne in Albany

A 23-year-old Albany man has fronted court today accused of driving a car into another man then fleeing the scene during a shocking melee on Stirling Terrace. Trymain Paul Maxton appeared in Albany Magistrate’s Court this morning after homicide squad detectives charged him with attempted murder and failing to stop and ensure assistance after an incident causing grievous bodily harm. No pleas were entered and he was remanded in custody. Mr Maxton’s defence counsel did not make a bail application The Lockyer man is next due to face court at the Stirling Gardens Magistrate’s Court in Perth on July 28. His alleged victim, former WAFL player Russell Wynne, 24, was left fighting for his life on Sunday after he was hit with a machete and then allegedly struck by a vehicle in the early hours of the morning. Police allege Mr Maxton was driving the car that struck Mr Wynne and caused critical injuries. They say the car he was driving was found at 3am on Sunday and he was arrested about 9am. Paramedics were called to Stirling Terrace about 1.20am, where they found Mr Wynne with traumatic injuries. The Mt Barker man was taken to Albany Health Campus, then flown to Perth by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Albany Det-Sen. Sgt Darryl Noye said a 22-year-old Lockyer man was helping police with their inquiries into a machete attack that “almost severed” Mr Wynne’s ear. The 22-year-old was in hospital receiving treatment for his own injuries, he said. Det-Sen. Sgt Noye said police had spoken to more than 20 potential witnesses and obtained CCTV footage that showed most of the melee. Stirling Terrace remained closed to the public on Monday as major crash officers carried out a scene reconstruction to help with the investigation. It is understood there were more than a dozen people involved in the melee on Stirling Terrace. Det-Sen. Sgt Noye said there could be further charges laid in relation to the altercation.
