Triple treat for Merrifield Park

Merrifield Park Tennis Club secured their seventh Champion of Champions title in the Lower Great Southern Tennis Association event held in Mt Barker on Sunday.

Shooting for a hat-trick of titles in the annual event, Merrifield Park were well represented and performed well across the five divisions to finish with 44 points, well ahead of their nearest rivals.

Lawley Park and Emu Point were declared joint runners-up after both collected 32 points, while Denmark Tennis Club (11 points) and hosts Mt Barker (2) rounded out the standings.

Merrifield Park’s Russ Truscott was undefeated in the men’s singles on his way to 10 points, while young gun Abbi Gibson swept the ladies’ singles to collect 10 points for the winners.

Nicky Thompson and Jarrod Capararo teamed up to win the mixed doubles, beating Michelle Watson and Greg Cook in what was ultimately the final.

Carl Turich and Les Bairstow proved too strong in the men’s doubles as the Merrifield Park pairing finished with 10 points, while the ladies’ doubles was won by Louise Nolan and Judy Wunnenburg from Emu Point.

A terrific field of players took to the courts for the event, which has been running since 2005.
