A $1.8 million refurbishment of the Plantagenet Cranbrook Health Service Emergency Department in Mt Barker has been completed.

Two new acute treatment bays, a resuscitation treatment bay, an ambulance airlock and a new nursing station were all included in the upgrade, along with utility and service rooms being refurbished.

Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said the upgrades were part of the State Government’s commitment to modernising country hospitals and health services.

“Additional works will improve the overall configuration of the site, making it easier for staff and patients to access the hospital,” she said.

“The new staff spaces are more functional, making it more convenient for healthcare teams to go about their day-to-day duties.”

Work now under way as part of a second stage of improvements includes creating a new ambulance bay and re-configuring the facility’s ED, wards and outpatient areas into a more contemporary layout.

The refurbishments are being touted as an opportunity to transform the Mt Barker-based service into a contemporary, fit-for-purpose facility.

Warren-Blackwood MLA Jane Kelsbie said the refurbishment would ensure the facility continued to meet the needs of the community into the future.

“Ensuring our region has access to top-quality healthcare services is a priority for me and it is fantastic to see these important emergency department upgrades completed,” she said.
