After concerns of yet another cancelled Mt Barker race meeting, jockeys Madi Derrick and Natasha Faithfull each scored winning doubles on Thursday. There were fears early after race one that the surface at Mt Barker Turf Club was unsafe for the remaining races to go ahead. Frost Park had already failed two inspections earlier this season and a third appeared imminent as jockeys, stewards and trainers looked over sections of the track. There were concerns with soft and shifting ground near the winning post and the first bend after the post. Between races, track crew were out filling holes with sand to ensure the meet went ahead as planned. Derrick opened her account with the first race of the day, riding Tropical Sun ($3.30) to victory in the New Year Celebration Maiden (1000m) ahead of $2.50 favourite Blazen Star. She completed her double when she steered Outfield ($9.50) to success in the Le Grand Handicap (1300m) ahead of Beautiful Baroque ($5) and Warralea Diamond ($10). Faithfull and Soldiers Camp held off a late challenge by Punters Pilot to seal victory in the Mt Barker Co-Op Maiden (1300m) before the Albany rider booted home Beau Zoom in the Kevin Forbes Handicap (1200m). Soldiers Camp’s win had extra significance as it was the first win for trainer Elianne Robinson with just her eighth career runner. Mitchell Pateman and Holly Watson teamed up to win the George Toovey Handicap (1000m) with Red Inferno. After three minor placings this season, Feels Danish broke through for trainer Leanne Howlett in race six over 1850m. Wagin trainer Angela Smith saddled up a winner when Hoolahoops ($8) was a dominant winner of the final race with Lisa Staples aboard. Apprentice jockey Rosie Mahony was suspended for seven days after pleading guilty to using her whip on seven more occasions than permitted in race two on Baywatch Boy. She will return to riding on Saturday and be back for Albany’s feature meeting on Sunday. Albany trainer Steve Wolfe was fined $50 for use of the club’s colours in race five with Star Soprano.
