After more than four decades of service to the industry, Narrikup’s Mungrup Stud owner Jan Williamson has been honoured for her role with racing by taking out the Ladies of Racing Dedication to Racing Award.

The winners of Racing and Wagering WA 2019 Ladies of Racing Awards were announced last week.

They awards celebrate the roles of women in the industry.

She has inspired many young women to get involved and shown them what can be achieved.

Ms Williamson and her family have built up Mungrup Stud to become one of leading thoroughbred nursery in WA.

They had 120 foals drop this year.

She said that she was surprised to receive the award, and was excited to see the racing industry moving away from male dominance.

“The last yearling sales there has been an incentive to have all-women owned horses — so approximately 20 horses got sold to female ownership,” she said.

“It is bringing a lot more fun and awareness to the racing industry and women being involved.”

Her main area on the farm is looking after the pregnant mares.

She said the stud was still family run, with several people working for them — most of whom are women.

“The horse numbers have gradually built up over the years, whereby we have our own horses and we also have full care for clients’ horses as well.

“The young team that we have is like another family network and everyone is doing it because they love it.”
