Top female quartet to battle it out

All four finals-bound teams will face off in tonight’s round 15 fixtures of the Albany Basketball Association women’s A-grade competition at the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre.

With the standings all but set heading into the final round, Flames take on Grammar Griffins in a 2nd versus 3rd encounter. Each team has registered a win over the other in their two head-to-head contests this season.

The Flames have established themselves as the competition’s most potent offence, averaging just under 40 points a game, led by star point guard Zandalee Arthur.

In stark contrast, they come up against the league’s most efficient defensive outfit, with the Griffins allowing the least points of any team so far this season.

When the sides played in round 5, Griffins restricted Flames to only 25 points to claim a nine-point win as Nina Smith poured in eight points for the victors.

Flames redeemed themselves in the round 10 replay with a hard-fought two-point victory off the back of 11 points from Arthur and a late free throw to Jorden Tester.

The fourth-placed Raiders under-18s development squad will take on ladder leaders Magpies, who have won both matches between the sides this season.

Panthers will take on Sparks in the other round 15 fixture.

With no major positional changes possible in the last round of the men’s A-grade competition, Dugites and Wolves will fight for pride, with the loser claiming the wooden spoon. Wolves have had a disappointing season after being tipped to contend for finals with the addition of star guards Matt Leary and John Murray.

Dugites were promoted to A-grade this season, and after winning their first game of the season against Wolves, have struggled to find any consistency.

Crabs will take on Tigers and Barking Owls will play Ambassadors, while Raiders have the bye.
