Top Esperance midfielder Riley Mayfield wins prestigious medal, Peel Cavaliers dominate Great Southern 20 team

Brilliant midfielder Riley Mayfield became the first Esperance player to win the Harry Reeves Medal since 2015 after his outstanding display at the Great Southern Colts Carnival in Kulin at the weekend. Mayfield, who hails from Ports Football Club, was named the fairest and best player at the two-day carnival after playing a key role in the Esperance engine room. Esperance finished fourth at the carnival, losing their playoff to Goldfields, but Mayfield was the dominant player across the eight teams competing and deserved the prestigious award. Mayfield is the first Esperance player to win the honour since 2015 when Brendon White tied with Peel’s Chad Wrigley. Esperance finished with one win, one draw and one loss in their three games on Saturday and fell short in a low-scoring playoff but Mayfield said it was a pleasing carnival all round. “It was good fun getting around the boys,” he said. “We only came away with one win and a draw but besides that there were good positives to come away from the carnival. “It’s a great honour to win (the medal). “Not too many people in Esperance can say they have got one. “To be able to represent your town, even though we didn’t come away with the choccies, but just to show up and show your talent.” The 19-year-old spent two years playing WAFL colts with Subiaco, averaging 12.7 disposals and kicking 19 goals in 27 games. Mayfield is on the Lions senior list and played two reserves games earlier this season but indicated he was keen on a move elsewhere in a bid to get more opportunities in the future. Peel star Bailey Jokic won the Clem Bray trophy as the fairest and best player in the grand final, as the Cavaliers powered to back-to-back titles with a 37-point triumph over Great Southern. Mayfield also earned selection in the Great Southern 20, an all-stars team picked by a panel of selectors watching all games at the carnival. Peel had the most members of the team with five players selected including Jokic and star forward Callen Sprigg. Mayfield and the skilful Kieran Douglas were the two Esperance representatives. Runners-up Great Southern had four players picked, with midfield pair Kaleb Germain and Teague Valli, half-back flanker Milan Jaggi and goal kicker Jaiden Mole. Flynn Spark, Riley Holden and Noah Logie were the Upper Great Southern trio selected while the winless Ongerup didn’t have any players in the all-star team.
