Tigers big win in the wet pushes them to second, Lions keep winning and Kangas claim a close one

Railways moved to second place on the Great Southern Football League ladder after a percentage boosting win over Albany at Tigerland this afternoon. In wet and windy conditions the Tigers kept their opponents scoreless to gain just under 18 percent and jump above Denmark-Walpole. Their sixth win of the season came at a cost but with a hamstring injury to star Mitch Green in the third term and he did not take any further part in game. The Tigers kicked seven goals after half time to run out comfortable 12.16 (88) to nil victors. Shane Braimbridge booted four goals playing as a deep forward while returning captain Bodhi Stubber and Craig Frost cleaned up everything across half-back. Joel Want and Cyrus Upson were also impressive in the 88-point win. Hudson O’Dea kept Tigers star Matt Palfrey goalless despite the high-flying forward being one of the home side’s best players. Flynn Breuker and Jake Stuart battled hard all game while Stewart Davies was solid in the ruck before going off with a eye injury. North Albany remain a chance to finish in third place after beating Mt Barker in a close affair at Sounness Park on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls began brightly and had two goals on the board at quarter time to hold a slender lead and the two sides were separated by only seven points at half time. However a three-goal third term set up the Kangas narrow 11-point victory. The visitors led by 18 points at the last chance and despite the Bulls kicking three goals to two in the final term, they prevailed in a tense finish. Luke Cameron booted three goals for the winners and was well supported by midfielder Nathan Crudeli and ruckman Aden Castlehow. Taj Williams and sturdy defender Regan Lloyd were also impressive as the Kangas won, 8.14 (62) to 7.9 (51). The win moved the Kangas level on points with third placed Magpies ahead of next week’s final round of the regular season. The Bulls were gallant in defeat but fell to their fourth straight loss. Brendan Wynne in his first game of the year was among the home side’s best players while Marcus Mellon and Rhys Hogg battled hard. Steven Scott was a focal point in attack with three majors. In Saturday’s other game, Royals thumped an undermanned Magpies outfit by 72 points to continue on their winning ways. Ryan Gaerth, Shayne Zanetti, Dionne Woods and Ash Smith were some of the big names missing from the Magpies line-up but they managed to kick two goals with the breeze in the opening term to hold a four-point advantage. The Lions kicked five goals with the breeze in the second and then outscored the visitors in the third to all but end the contest. It got ugly in the final quarter as the Lions careered away to a big win, 15.9 (99) to 4.3 (27). Cameron Allison and Tom Maslen dominated through the middle of the ground, Brayden Parker was again able to set up his side well behind the footy and they found plenty of avenues to kick goals. Paul Donaldson was superb at centre half forward and kicked three while Maslen, Declan McNamara, David Parker and Rivah Bocian all kicked two majors each. The Magpies were left to rue two scoreless quarters and they slipped to third as a result of the heavy defeat. Alec Haskins was the Magpies best contributor and he was well supported by David Scriven, Jackson Whooley and Jayden Woods. Henry Woods booted three goals but they lacked targets inside forward 50.
